The BMW test fails when current draw exceeds a calibrated limit and/or an open or short is detected. Short to VPWR in harness or HO2S. Water in harness connector. Open VPWR circuit. Open GND circuit. Diagnosis And Repairing P338D
P338D the main thing to check is to verify the operation of the VCT solenoid. You're looking for a sticking or stuck VCt solenoid valve caused by contamination. Refer to vehicle specific repair manual to perform component tests for the VCT unit.

- Damaged camshaft position (CMP) sensor
- Faulty ignition coil (s)
- Incorrect Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) hose connection
- Open or short in the CMP sensor circuits
